Jello has come a long way since the middle of the twentieth century. Perhaps you remember the kind of desserts made with jello from the 1960s or maybe your mother or grandmother still likes to make these for the holidays! Perhaps you are looking for jello recipes from the 1960s or just curious about what was popular during that era.

Savory Jello Salads

JELL-O

One of the most popular dishes made with jello from that time was jello salad recipes and these were often savory. The idea of combining lime jello with tuna fish or pineapple gelatin with vegetables might sound strange now but these dishes were served at dinner parties and they were very popular. The main problem that people have with these savory gelatin salad recipes is the texture, rather than the flavor.

Plain gelatin was also used to make savory jello salad recipes but the idea of chopped meat, fish, and vegetables suspended in a clear gelatinous mass is perhaps not the most appetizing thought. Some people do not like the texture of gelatin with savory food, although they might love sweet jello recipes like fruity jello pie or a layered jello recipe.

Vintage Sweet Jello Recipes

Jello in the 1960s was usually just combined with water or water and chopped fruit to make a simple dessert. There were fewer flavors of jello in the 1960s but sweet jello recipes of that era were fairly basic. Layered jello was an option, fruit chunks in jello was another and these basic jello desserts would have been served with some whipped cream or ice cream.

Today of course, there is much more that we can do with jello, both with jello gelatin and the other varieties, which have been, launched like jello pudding and jello no bake cheesecake mix.

Recipe for 1960s Tuna and Lime Jello Salad

This savory jello salad recipe serves six people and it is a typical jello dish from the 1960s. You can serve it as an appetizer or add it to a buffet table. The idea of combining lime jello with fish might sound bizarre but if you have cooked a savory fish recipe with lime juice, you will already know that the flavors go together. Why not try this recipe? You might even like it!

You will need:

  • 1 1/2 cups hot water
  • 3 tablespoons chopped onion
  • 7 oz can drained, flaked tuna
  • 1/4 cup chopped celery
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 package lime jello
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 3 tablespoons vinegar
  • 8 oz cottage cheese
  • 1/2 cup thinly sliced radishes
  • Lettuce leaves, for garnish

How to make it:

Dissolve the jello in the hot water, and then stir in the salt and vinegar. Chill this mixture until it is thick, and then fold in the onion, tuna, celery, mayonnaise, cottage cheese, and radishes. Pour the mixture into an eight inch ring mold and chill it until set. Unmold on to the lettuce and serve.

Entertaining With Jello - Classic Jello Recipes From the 1960s

There are some fascinating jello recipes from the 1960s although with all the new jello flavors and varieties that have been introduced since then, there is now much more choice. You might like to try a retro jello recipe or a modern one, such as a no bake cheesecake recipe or jello pie recipe.
